General Assembly

Virginia has a part-time state legislature called the Virginia General Assembly comprised of the House of Delegates and Senate of Virginia.

State Legislators
100 Delegates: serve two year terms
40 Senators: serve four year terms

General Assembly Regular Session – begins in January
Long Session (Even Years): 60 days
Short Session (Odd Years): 46 days

Budget Process
Virginia passes a biennial budget that covers two years. The full biennium budget is adopted during long sessions and amendments to the current budget are adopted during short sessions.
